Vert de Venise Contemporary Art is delighted to present Interludi, an exhibition of work by Nini Morelli — a painter, photographer, sculptor, and illustrator based in Venice whose multifaceted practice spans over five decades.
Morelli graduated in 1969 with a degree in book illustration, and began her artistic journey as a photographer, undertaking extended travels through India, the Pamir Mountains, and later Central and South America. These early experiences, rich in cultural and visual encounters, continue to inform the depth and diversity of her work.
From the late 1970s, Morelli expanded her practice to encompass the broader field of visual art, with a landmark exhibition at Galleria Valentini in Milan in 1979 marking her first foray into the fragmentation and reconstruction of the image — a conceptual approach that has remained central to her oeuvre.
Interludi marks a new chapter in this enduring exploration. Here, the sacred imagery of Italian masters — including Crivelli, Lotto, Guardi, Pisanello, and Pontormo — is not merely referenced, but rigorously deconstructed and reassembled. Through a process akin to a "reverse restoration", Morelli liberates these figures from their canonical forms, allowing new, often unexpected meanings to emerge. The result is a body of work that is both visually arresting and intellectually resonant: a meditation on memory, transformation, and the enduring power of the image.
