We are delighted to present Sestieri, a new cycle of collage works by Roxana Kenjeeva, one of the gallery’s principal artists. This body of work takes as its starting point the six sestieri of Venice – distinct districts, each shaped by its own rhythms, histories and sense of community, yet inseparable from the fragile and complex whole that is Venice itself. Kenjeeva’s collages are composed with a remarkable lightness of touch, capturing the city’s fugitive atmosphere and elusive emotional register. Venice emerges not as a fixed image, but as something perpetually in flux: glimpsed, remembered and reimagined. The works move fluidly between the perspectives of residents and those of the enchanted outsider, acknowledging both lived familiarity and the sense of wonder that has drawn generations of visitors to the city.
While Sestieri offers a compelling visual meditation on Venice’s enduring local traditions, it also speaks to the city’s long history as a place of arrival and exchange. Kenjeeva’s vision celebrates the successive waves of travellers, migrants and newcomers who have shaped Venice over centuries, and who continue to call it home. In doing so, the series reflects on broader questions of belonging, movement and cultural continuity within a city that has always existed at the intersection of land, water and imagination.
